UnApologetically Indigenous

UnApologetically Indigenous; not apologizing for being indigenous, for being a native of a certain place, for being unique.

But why should I apologize for who I am? Why should I apologize for being a tama’ita’i (young female) or a taule’ale’a (young man)? Why should I apologize for being Samoan and blessed with a culture that is still thriving in this complex age of technology? These were the questions explored by our Tupulaga Ta’iala Peer Leaders when we discussed this year’s theme “UnApologetically Indigenous” at our most recent Ta’iala Peer Leaders’ Retreat.

Is being indigenous an issue? Apparently, it is in many countries and many places as we learn about the struggles of indigenous peoples. Perhaps this is the benefit of growing up in a living culture on an island tucked away from the rest of the world.

This generation is empowering themselves with a profound understanding of their indigenous identity, cultural heritage, sustainable living, faith in their Creator God, and connection to their lands.

Watch this 7-minute video as our Ta’iala Peer Leaders give their interpretation of the topic and learn to take up space unapologetically indigenous.
